A new profession was born: that of ecological coach. Former manager at Tetra Pak, Yves Cappelaire is one of these pioneers of the environment serving consumers. After having accompanied Electrolux within the framework of a competition, he agreed to answer our questions on the main problems of household appliances. Interview by Axelle de Guelz What do you recommend for a beginner green? Tell yourself that it is not going to be an act of ecology but of common sense! Consuming better, less, wisely, is playing on the environmental picture - of the near future -, but also on that of the economy - immediately! There are therefore only good reasons to quickly adopt a responsible mode of use and consumption. Astrophysicist Hubert Reeves said that when it comes to environmental gestures, there are no small gestures. How right he is! Just imagine a low-energy light bulb, a properly regulated refrigerator, a sober washing machine, multiplied by millions of individuals or households? Well it is a nuclear power plant that we will not have to build, or a dam less. Not to mention thermal power plants ... So my only advice will be ... do it! Are there any tips for consuming less? There are dozens! It would take too long to list them here. In addition, there are many other sources of information recognized to be of service to the planet and to your budget: the websites of ADEME, WWF, various NGOs or even suppliers of energy or fluids, known. But more than tips or recipes, I invite everyone, in their moments of consumption, use of products or service, in their acts of purchase, to ask themselves the question "what I am about to do will it be good or bad for my environment? ". Many of us have been brought up in an impression of opulence. This period is behind us and we must "decondition" - the word is strong - of certain habits. Good news, it's very easy! What would be a typical prognosis for an average household? I want to be very transparent on this point. Applying the best practices of use, choosing the most sober household appliances will not free you a budget to go on vacation next summer. Maybe not even for the next weekend! But I also want to be concrete and give some significant figures. If a household chooses a washing machine in the A + and A ++ category, on the basis of 200 annual washes, between 1,600 and 5,400 liters of water will be saved over a year. If this same fireplace goes from manual dishwashing to a sober dishwasher (12 liters of water per cycle), 71% of water will be saved . Last example, a class A ++ refrigerator will consume 30% less electricity than that of the class, not B or C, but A +! If each household applies good environmental practices for home heating, transport, food, leisure, the impact will be measurable and visible in the household budget. It will be especially visible for our environment when we have aggregated all the households that have adopted these good habits at the level of a municipality, a department or a country.
